Does mulch insulate?

Does mulch limit weed growth?

A layer of about three to four inches of mulch can help smother and suppress weeds by depriving them of the sunlight they need to germinate and grow. In addition, any weeds that do pop up will be easy to pull out since their roots are unlikely to grow very deep.

Does mulch control pest?

Certain types of mulch, such as cedar, cypress and pinewood chips, contain oils that repel ticks, gnats and fleas. In addition, as the mulch decomposes, it changes the soil composition and encourages the growth of beneficial fungi and provides helpful insects, such as earthworms, with food and shelter.
