Who are we and why choose us?
There are a lot of lawn care companies out there and a recognizable name will make you feel good and secure with hiring them… but why not feel good with not only trusting the people you hire and seeing a well maintained lawn but knowing that your money won’t just help someone support their family but will also go to help sick children make a wish come true!!
Let me back up. I grew up in the sticks of Noble, Ok and later moved to Moore where I spent most of my teen and adult years. I graduated, got married, had two beautiful kids and bought a house. The American Dream…
Then life happened! I got divorced, moved into an apartment and with the grace of God I got both my kids! Life wasn’t perfect but you appreciate what you have right!?
Tragedy strikes! My kids were with their mom in Texas for the first part of the summer, my son was 8 years old and had been acting different and every once in awhile his eye would wander but just for a moment. I was concerned so I had their mom take him to a doctor to be safe but remember it as if it were just yesterday. I was at Tinker AFB building 2121 working in dock 6 when my their mom called, I let it go to voicemail because I was busy but shortly listened to the voicemail. I could feel the concern and fear in her voice wash over me like fire! Something about white matter on the MRI of his brain… I knew it was not good and I couldn’t stop crying! I didn’t know what to do and it was soon to become a journey that would change our lives forever. I bought plane tickets for the soonest flight back home to Oklahoma City and scheduled him for another MRI and an appointment with a Pediatric Neurologist in Bethany Oklahoma.
Lorenzo’s Oil burns bright! A devastatingly misleading title for me it turns out! After Gavin’s MRI I asked the technician if I could have a copy of the images on disc, she obliged and I took the disc home and went straight away viewing them. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at exactly so I googled white matter images in a child’s brain. I scrolled through the pictures and came across a picture that was an exact match to what was on Gavin’s MRI… Lorenzo’s Oil burns bright! That was the title and right away I felt optimistic! As I start reading my heart was torn from my body! It felt like an out of body experience, as if the reality was too much for my mind to bear so my spirit departed my physical body escaping the pain I knew was coming.
Adrenoleukodystrophy! We went to see the Neurologist, I told him what I thought might be what was going on, he didn’t say yes but said it was possible. August 12, 2008 was the day I got the call confirming… ALD. I will spare the unfortunate reality of what this disorder does to a child but on Sept 21, 2009 Gavin passed away. He loved a lot of things! His sister Taylor, Dinosaurs, OU football, and reading The Giving Tree with and to me… and he really loved SpongeBob.
Make-a-Wish! If throughout your life, whether it be work, driving down the road or at a restaurant, you’ve wondered where all the good people with caring hearts have gone you don’t have to look past the Make-a-Wish foundation. We contacted them and at the drop of a hat they were there ready to help, support, and deliver a wish to a child not long for this world. Gavin wanted to meet SpongeBob and they made sure that his wish would come true. They met up with us to let him know, they threw a party for him and before he knew it he was awestruck at the sight of SpongeBob in the flesh!! (so to speak). I will forever be indebted and honored to work with these wonderful people, the foundation and all the people that donate their time and money helping these unfortunate souls!
Pay it Forward! So for as long as I can remember I have always wanted to own my own company and share what I learn and earn with people in my life and in the community. I often struggled taking money for services I’ve provided for the simple fact that I was capable and they were not. That’s just the kind of guy I am! For all that my son, my family and I have endured, for the ones that have come into my life guiding me and picking me up when I was down I feel empowered to make a difference! Fast forward to just the last few weeks, it’s April 13, 2019 an idea hit me recently that would both fill my desire to work for myself and know that every day I go out to work I am paving the way to help a child escape the reality of an illness for just a little bit. I decided that I would start a mowing and landscaping company. Knowing that every payment we receive a portion would go to the Make-A-Wish foundation and help sick children makes taking payments easy!
Makae in the company’s name is my sons middle name. I miss you dearly Gavin Makae Andrews!!
